Collaborative members regularly provide presentations, lectures, and workshops on HIA, as well as provide technical support to practitioners nationally and mentor graduate student applied HIA research projects. UC Berkeley faculty teaches the only masters-level HIA course in the United States and also conducts evaluations of HIA practice. SFDPH teaches a four day HIA mini-course geared to prospective practitioners, and HIP regularly conducts HIA workshops and trainings to help stakeholders initiate new HIA projects.
Below we list our major HIA training and mentorship opportunities, including brief descriptions of each as well we where to go for more information.

Human Impact Partners' 2-Day HIA Training
|
HIP |
The overall goal of HIP’s HIA training is to provide participants with the experience and knowledge about procedures and tools available to effectively conduct HIA and use HIA findings. Over two days, the training covers the HIA process and essential steps; offers facilitated group exercises to practice moving through the steps of an HIA in the context of relevant case study examples; provides information about HIA tools and methodologies for analysis; discusses the importance of collaboration and the variety of roles for stakeholders in each of the steps of an HIA; discusses intervention points in regulatory and policy-setting processes where HIA can be applied; and helps strategize about participants’ needs and challenges as they consider conducting HIAs. The training provides a unique opportunity to engage diverse stakeholders in the process of identifying and characterizing the health effects resulting from a proposed policy or project.
We typically provide trainings for groups of 30-35 participants who: a) want to work together on a specific HIA or b) want to build local knowledge about HIA across diverse organizational partners with the goal of starting to conduct HIAs. See training materials here.

HIP provides technical assistance (TA) and mentoring to organizations conducting HIA. TA and mentoring activities can include:
- Regular phone meetings to discuss an HIA project;
- Addressing questions as they arise by phone or email;
- Sharing HIA resources (e.g., worksheets, toolkits, quantitative tools, and data sources);
- Reviewing data, documents, methods or other related materials relevant to an HIA;
- Conducting research for the HIA assessment phase; and,
- In-person site visits to facilitate HIA-related meetings and review progress of HIA projects, or web-based informational sessions about conducting HIA.

UC Berkeley School of Public Health HIA Course
|
UC Berkeley |
This graduate level course is jointly provided by the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and Department of City and Regional Planning to students enrolled at UC Berkeley. The goal of this course is to expose students to the rationale, practice and potential of HIA with a focus on its application to California’s land use and transportation policy-making. In this course, students consider the reasons for doing HIA, review a range of HIA case studies and analytic methods, and consider the potential of HIA as well as the needs and challenges for practice development. As a class project, students also critically evaluate a local, regional, or state policy, project, or plan, identifying health benefits and consequences, potential approaches to quantify or qualify how the project may change health determinants, and recommendations for alternatives or improvements.
See course syllabus here. The UCB course is offered the spring semester of each academic year. |
